Fundamentalmente, la bater\u00eda tiene un tanque que se llena con el agua proveniente de la depuradora. En el tanque hay unos electrodos que liberan iones de sodio a la soluci\u00f3n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El movimiento de los iones hace que una corriente fluya desde el electrodo ani\u00f3nico al cati\u00f3nico. A continuaci\u00f3n, el agua dulce se sustituye r\u00e1pidamente por agua salada, con lo que los iones de sodio y cloro se reincorporan a los electrodos y se invierte la corriente el\u00e9ctrica. Tanto la entrada de agua dulce como de agua salada generan electricidad, de modo que la bater\u00eda se carga y descarga constantemente sin necesidad de recibir energ\u00eda de fuentes externas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las primeras pruebas de este&nbsp;<strong>proyecto tecnol\u00f3gico con energ\u00eda azul<\/strong>, llevadas a cabo en una planta de procesamiento de aguas residuales de Palo Alto (EE. UU), alternando el agua salada de una bah\u00eda cercana y el agua dulce ya depurada en ciclos de una hora, han demostrado la viabilidad de la&nbsp;<strong>nueva tecnolog\u00eda<\/strong>.
