UNINTERLINGUA 2015

U N I N T E R L I N G U A 101 on her first anniversary. Sadly, she followed the instructions, the shadow was released, and their torment at the hands of the creatu- re began. Knowing that the shadow needed his presence to exist, Lazarus exiled himself to the nearby island with the abandoned li- ghthouse. Determined to be with him no ma- tter the cost, Alma sailed to the island, only to be attacked and drowned by the shadow, which then returned to the bottle in triumph. After finishing this story, Lazarus, the shadow in disguise, admits to Simone that he had developed feelings for her: “Cuando usted y su familia llegaron aquí, no pude evi- tar que mi corazón se fijase en usted” (242). This is what prompted the shadow to trick Hannah into releasing it so that it could once more wreak its revenge on the man who da- red share his heart with another once again. Meanwhile, Irene and Ismael escape near death in the sea cave and return to Sea viewwhere they rescue Dorian. He tells them that Simone was taken away by the shadow. Irene instructs Dorian to run to town and tell the police that Simone is being held capti- ve at Cravenmoore, and she and Ismael head for the mansion to try and rescue her mother. The shadow quickly discovers their presence and attacks, but it is temporarily interrupted by the return of Lazarus who sti- ll has some control over the creature. The teens are able to locate Simone, barely alive in a bedroom, but are unable to get her out before the shadow confronts them. They are saved again by Lazarus’ sudden appearan- ce, but his control over the shadow is almost gone. In desperation, Lazarus does the one thing he knows will destroy the shadow and save his friends: he pulls a revolver from his pocket and shoots himself in the chest. Irene and Ismael carry Simone from the room and flee the mansion. As the shadow howls in despair, with his dying breath La- zarus holds up the bottle, and the shadow enters it. Lazarus quickly puts in the stopper and then throws the trapped shadow into the fireplace. As the bottle and fireplace ex- plode, the entire room catches on fire, and soon the whole mansion is burning, destro- ying the shadow, and cremating Lazarus and his beloved “Alma.” After this horrific ex- perience, the jobless Simone and her chil- dren leave the area. Eleven years later, the letter from Irene at the close of the book indicates her inten- tion to return to Blue Bay where Ismael still lives. The author clearly implies that these two will find each other again and perhaps gain some happiness after the horrors of their teen years and the ensuing war. Both Ismael and Lazarus carry out heroic actions that place them in harm’s way to protect Irene and Alma, respectively. Love turns Ismael into a hero, but it turns Lazarus into a prisoner. In many ways, Ismael may remind us of a classical Greek hero. He demons- trated great bravery when fighting against a supernatural foe, he saved the life of ano- ther more than once, and he exhibited true Love and horror in the earlier...
