In desperation, Óscar went to visit Dr. Shelley in the hope that the good doctor still had one of the “life-giving” vials Mijail had produced. But when Óscar asked Dr. Shelley for the vial for Marina, he told him they had all been destroyed. He also told Óscar that even if he had one to give, he would not do it, as the only way to keep Marina alive would be the same way Mijail survived for so many years: living off of others. Óscar understood that this was not the life he or German would want for her, and he also now understood why Mijail, in the beginning, had gone to such extremes to find a cure for Eva. His love for her had been so great that he did not care what it took to give her some sort of quality of life. Pierina Beckman Unfortunately, in the process, his soul and body were lost. It was only then that Óscar knew he would never again judge Mijail. Soon after, Marina was able to leave the ICU, but her doctor said there was no- thing else to be done for her. German took her home, and Óscar left school to help take care of her. The day before she passed, Marina told Óscar she loved him and kissed him for the first time. After her cremation, both German and the young man drove to her favorite place on the beach and scatte- red her ashes. Upon returning to the city, the two men hugged, and Óscar never saw German again. The one bond they shared had died, and Óscar would probably be only a painful reminder to what German had lost: everything.
