U N I N T E R L I N G U A 76 they also need to pay attention to pronun- ciation patterns, vocabulary needed, certain comprehension of the language, and last but not least a communicative objective in mind, among other things. Therefore, there are some important issues to be considered. One of the situations the teachers would like to have in all the students are some characteristics or requisites to enter to the language classroom. The first one is the knowledge of the vocabulary people need in a certain situation, otherwise communi- cating would be practically impossible. Also, the knowledge and appropriateness for using discourse connector when communi- cating is a factor. That is because it would not be appropriate to say something where it would not be rational. That already pro- vides an idea of the difficulty the teachers have. The people should also know how to open and close when they establish a con- versation with a native speaker. i.e “excuse me” or “thank you”. The basic intonation has to be considered in order to generate intelli- gibility; this should be along with the proper rhythm and stress in the spoken language. But not only is required that, knowing how in Mexico or even elementary school nowa- days, they feel so excited that they are going to be able to speak to “gringos”, but what a surprise when they start learning a lot of grammar rules or making translations from English to Spanish or vice verse. The result at the end, is people who might know a lot of isolated words, understanding reading or even writing some unstructured paragraphs, but about speaking, nothing. Moreover, the same results keep repeating generation after generation. Hence, what are we doing to get those results? Or even better, what are we doing to avoid them? We as teachers should be aware of many things when our goal is to make our students speak English. The first thing is to consider learning about some theoretical bases in order to understand how to develop the speaking fluency we are loo- king for. Then, some proposals, which are made for making students speak the Engli- sh language, should also be considered.
