It\u2019s been speculated that&nbsp;<em>cantankerous<\/em>&nbsp;is a product of the Middle English&nbsp;<em>contack<\/em>, meaning \u201ccontention,\u201d under the influence of a pair of words:&nbsp;<em>rancorous<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>cankerous<\/em>. <em>Rancorous&nbsp;<\/em>brings the anger and &#8220;bitter deep-seated ill will&#8221; (as <em>rancor&nbsp;<\/em>can be understood to mean).
