Fashion and Bionics: Fusion in Design #ESCAT #Uninter #Fashion

ESCAT

In the world of fashion, trends are important, but themes and inspiration are even more so.

What happens when the theme is about bionics and design?

In the following projects, you will see how fashion students provided solutions for their assigned projects.

ORDINARY PROJECT

For the subject of Bionics and Design, as an ordinary project, fashion students were assigned to develop a clothing line with five garments, each of which had to meet the following specifications:

  • Draw inspiration from an animal or insect; it could be one for all five garments or a different one for each garment.
  • Justify and explain for each garment which characteristics or abilities of the selected animal/insect are applied in the design.
  • Create a flat sketch.
  • Draw mannequins, both front and back views.
  • Make patterns with molds and templates.
  • Create an isologo representing the designer’s brand and place it on the garments, presenting them individually.
  • Generate mock-up applications of the garments.
  • Conclude with a presentation showcasing the entire project.

STUDENT WORK

The projects by students María Paola Zamora Rivera and Angélica Yadira Contreras Mancilla, from the 6th semester of LDM, managed to create a clothing line that impressed their peers.

FLAT SKETCH

A flat sketch is a technical drawing made with simple lines that shows the construction details of garments without shadows to avoid errors in pattern making and manufacturing.

It also describes different types of research, such as primary and secondary, that allow the development of a creative and inspiring fashion design concept.

FRONT AND BACK MANNEQUIN DRAWINGS (FIGURINES)

The fashion figurine can be a simple sketch with few lines, yet well-drawn. It represents the ideas and cuts of the garment quickly, in a schematic way.

Certain drawing skills are required, although for this type of figurine-sketch, a high knowledge of pattern making is sufficient to translate what will later be necessary to consider in the pattern to make the garment feasible.

Designers and pattern makers have many techniques to create their fashion figurines, from computer drawing programs, watercolors, markers, to traditional charcoal or pencil.

PATTERN MAKING: MOLDS AND TEMPLATES

Pattern making is the technique through which templates (patterns or molds) are obtained, used to cut fabrics that are then assembled into a garment.

This process starts with taking measurements of the subject’s silhouette, considering the design to be made, and then placing the pattern on the paper surface, where the complete mold of the garment is constructed.

ISOLOGO CREATION

As part of the project, students also had to create an isologo based on the selected animal or insect.

The goal was to generate a base grid for constructing the isologo.

This isologo was also required to be present on each garment.

PRACTICAL MOCK-UP APPLICATIONS

The intention of the mock-up applications was to present the garments in a context where they could be used.

The students worked on digital image retouching to make their garments look as if they were already produced.

PROJECT PRESENTATION

On the delivery day, each student had to present their work in front of the class and the professor.

After the presentations, classmates gave feedback on each project, and finally, the professor provided feedback, concluding the project delivery.
