Lightning Possibly Detected on Mars

Scientists study electrical activity in the planet’s atmosphere

cientists believe they may have detected lightning on Mars for the first time. NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on the planet in 2021, recorded sounds and signals that suggest electrical activity in Mars’s atmosphere.

Researchers from France analyzed the data and found signs of what they call “mini lightning” or electrical discharges. These signals appeared near dust devils and dust storms, which are common on Mars. Dust devils form when hot air rises from the ground and can create electrical charges as they move.

If confirmed, this discovery would be important for understanding Mars’s climate and atmosphere. It could place Mars alongside Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn, which are known to have lightning.

However, some scientists remain cautious. The electrical activity was detected through sound, not sight, so more research is needed to confirm whether it was real lightning.

The finding adds to recent discoveries on Mars that may help scientists learn more about the planet’s past environment and possible life.
