As an exchange student in Mexico, one of my first must-try experiences was tacos. In Cuernavaca, taco stands are everywhere, and they offer more than just food—they’re part of the culture.
My first taste of tacos al pastor, with marinated pork, cilantro, onions, and salsa, was unforgettable. Tacos can be eaten very differently here, they can be enjoyed standing around a taco stand or sitting down in a restaurant. There is a street called “Calle de los tacos” in Cuernavaca where you can try different Taco restaurants day and night.
What surprised me most is the variety—different kinds of meat, pineapple to put on top and many different kinds of salsa, ranging from mild to fiery. I suggest always trying a little bit of the salsa before putting it on your taco because even if they look like the same kind, they differ in spiciness from place to place.
Taco culture to me is a perfect example of Mexico’s warmth and love for sharing good food. It’s an experience that’s made me feel more connected to life here.

Als Austauschstudentin in Mexiko waren Tacos eines der ersten Gerichte, das ich unbedingt probieren musste. In Cuernavaca gibt es überall Tacostände, und sie bieten mehr als nur Essen – sie sind Teil der Kultur.
Die ersten Tacos, die ich probiert habe waren Tacos al pastor, mit mariniertem Schweinefleisch, Koriander, Zwiebeln und Salsa. Tacos können hier sehr unterschiedlich gegessen werden, man kann sie im Stehen bei einem Tacostand oder im Sitzen in einem Restaurant geniessen. Es gibt eine Strasse namens „Calle de los tacos“ in Cuernavaca, wo man Tag und Nacht verschiedene Taco-Restaurants ausprobieren kann.
Was mich am meisten überrascht hat, ist die Vielfalt – verschiedenste Fleischsorten, Ananas zum Drauflegen und viele verschiedene Salsasorten, die mild bis feurig sein können. Ich empfehle, immer erst ein wenig von der Salsa zu probieren, bevor man sie auf seinen Taco gibt, denn auch wenn sie gleich aussehen, können sie von Ort zu Ort unterschiedlich sein.
Für mich ist die Taco-Kultur ein perfektes Beispiel für die mexikanische Herzlichkeit und die Liebe zum guten Essen. Durch diese Erfahrung fühle ich mich mit dem Leben hier noch mehr verbunden.
